The booze was flowing. The aroma of sherry, turkey and all the trimmings filled the air. The waiters and waitresses were complimenting each other’s festive attire. And dozens of elderly and isolated people were dancing to 5,6,7,8.

That could only mean it was One Day at Christmas.

Faversham House is a proud benefactor of this annual charity do, which creates a Christmas experience for elderly, isolated people in London in the run-up to the main event. Tony Longhurst, Laura Hurel and Ben Hargreaves represented Faversham House this year, serving food and drinks at twin events at ExCeL in Docklands and the Business Design Centre, Islington.

One Day at Christmas was set up by the events industry to provide a special Christmas for people who would not otherwise have that opportunity.

Laura, who joined our marketing team earlier this year, said: “I wasn’t sure what to expect from One Day at Christmas, but seeing the joy a simple meal, cup of tea and a chat can bring to a person was truly a rewarding experience.

“Each guest expressed genuine gratitude for the day, and it really highlights what a difference one small act can make. Might need to brush up on my dancing, but I will definitely be going next year!”

Meanwhile Ben worked behind the bar for the day at ExCeL. “This was the second time I’d volunteered for One Day at Christmas. It feels good to give something back to people who might not necessarily have the best experience at Christmas because they don’t have the means or lots of company or family around.”

And Tony added: “I had lots of fun helping out at One Day at Christmas. Everyone invited seemed to be having a really good time and it was very well-organised. There were lots of volunteers and we all enjoyed chatting to the guests, listening to their stories and making sure they had everything they needed and had a fab day.”
